I am very excited to announce a new component to Salad For President: The MoMA PS1 Rooftop Salad Garden. In collaboration with Camilla Hammer, I have transformed the rooftop at MoMA PS1 into a Salad Garden: an accessible green space for museum visitors, museum staff, and a backdrop for interviews and conversations with other artists. Confirmed guest salad chefs include: Jon Kessler, Sina Najafi, Nina Katchadourian, Mika Rottenberg, Alison Knowles, Hisham Bharoocha, Ryan Foerster, Aki Sasamoto and many more.

This is not an art project, this is not a curatorial project, this is a series of conversations, through the lens of salad.

A wide variety of unusual herbs and vegetables have been selected for this garden, highlighting what can be eaten fresh from the ground, unprocessed, seasonal and homegrown.

Guest artists will compose a salad using ingredients from the garden. While we eat, I will conduct a casual interview about each guests varied outlets for creative expression, be it cooking and/or gardening, sports, playing music or painting en plein air. I will document and elaborate on my work as the MoMA PS1 Salad Gardener and the resulting photographs, interviews and salad recipes will be shared on the blog.

Camilla Hammer is an urban farmer and garden designer, serving as the Chief Garden Consultant for this project. She worked on a variety of farms domestically and abroad, before returning to New York in 2011 to start Battery Urban Farm in downtown Manhattan. Hammer has recently transitioned to full time garden design and consultation for non-profit, for-profit, restaurant and private clients in all five boroughs.

Beginning June 19th, we invite visitors to tour the garden, taste the herbs smell the plants and the recycled Mast Brothers cocoa husk mulch. Become acquainted with the art and pleasure of growing your own food.
